None of us were expecting the Glass walking, we went out to light the fire and came back in to find a mat laid out full of broken glass.

We looked at each other as it dawned on us what was coming next.

As someone from the crowd shouted 'it's fake glass' the instructors took a hammer to a fresh bottle, and sprinkled it over the top.

Mark was first to have a go, and made it across without any blood. Which prompted everyone else to have their turn.

It felt like walking over a pebble beach.

The bit we'd all spent the evening preparing for (whilst everyone else was sat at the bar).

As we casually walked towards the bed of coals which was earlier a fierce fire, it dawned upon us they actually expected us to walk across!

We raked the fire, and could feel the intense heat on our faces, we took a step back to cool off.

The instructor was first to cross, followed by a cautious Rich - and the rest of the group.

Confused by the fact we didn't get burnt we all had a few more goes.

Please do not try any of this at home!

Michael Shermer, publisher of Skeptic magazine and monthly columnist for Scientific American, tries his hand at firewalking barefoot across 1000-degree red hot coals and doesn't get burned.
Dr. Shermer provides a scientific explanation for the mysterious phenomenon.
