The Lemon Appeal
Help us to help the families of very sick children by holding a fundraising event in your school, work or group. You could hold a Yellow Day for Martha Care.
As an individual who wants to help but doesn't have the time to set up an event, complete a standing order form and make a regular contribution.
Martha Care’s main aim is to provide a child and families social work counsellor for the Barbara Russell Unit in Frenchay Hospital who will provide much needed emotional support and advice to families.
Frenchay Hospital is the South West Regional centre for certain specialisms. Children in need of serious orthopaedic treatment, Neurosurgery, Burns & Plastic surgery, Brain & Spinal tumours and who have received serious head injuries come from all over the South West of England for treatment, mostly as in-patients. This means families anywhere from Gloucestershire to Cornwall may find themselves staying with their child in the ward for a stay which can, for some families, be months.
In addition, we will also contribute to the physical comforts for parents and families by ensuring that the rooms are well cared for and basic supplies are available.
We aim to provide some basic necessities too. Families have to go into hospital immediately with no chance to collect up items for what can sometimes be a very lengthy stay. Yet life still goes on; bills have to be paid, siblings educated, work commitments re-arranged. Access to a phone and internet would help parents stay in touch with extended family and their community.
We want to provide some home comforts, TVs in every parents room, double beds, tea & coffee making facilities, meal and car parking vouchers.
Alongside this, parents also need advice and support from someone on the ward who can listen and advise them and has the time to do so. The family support counsellor will also contact home agencies like social services, mobility services, voluntary agencies so that when the child is discharged parents will have as much support as is available once they get home. The hospital will arrange the medical needs so we leave that to them.
