Carolyne's Kilimanjaro Challenge

Reasons why I want to climb Kilikanjaro:

It's something I've wanted to do for quite a few years and as it's my 50th birthday this year thought it would be nice to spend it on top of a mountain. It's very symbolic of reaching a milestone in my life. I've bought up 4 sons on my own and at last feel a sense of achievement and a sense of freedom. 2 are at University and 1 at college. My youngest is still at school. They're growing up into very fine young men.

Last year I managed to climb Snowdon, Scaffell Pike and Ben Nevis on my own and found out I love climbing mountains. Kilimanjaro is just taking it a bit further. Who knows what I'll be doing after that!  I enjoy a new challenge every year and this year, because it's my 50th birthday year, I want to do something spectacular.

One of Africa's most magnificent sights, Mount Kilimanjaro stands at a majestic 5895m above sea level. This nearly perfectly shaped volcano is Africa's highest peak and the ambition of avid trekkers from around the globe! The Machame route, sometimes called the Whisky Route, is considered by many to be the most scenic of the paths to the summit. Climb through magnificent mountain forests and moorland, and emerge into the high alpine deserts as you catch glimpses of immense mountain walls, glaciers and ice fields - all en route towards our final goal, Uhuru peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro!

Although I'm funding the trip myself I realised it would be a good idea to raise some money for a charity. I wanted to find something local as I've been part of Glastonbury for 20 years now. I approached the Martha Care trust because I had heard about Martha whilst my youngest son attended St Benedicts school.

I leave on the 14th November 2010, taking the Machame Route 8 day trek.  This means my birthday will be spent actually about 2/3rds of the way up the mountain.  I will be taking a Martha Care yellow brooch with me to leave on the mountain, along with wishes from my children written on a stone.

Although I'm paying for the trip myself, I'd really appreciate any local company who would be prepared to sponsor me by providing some of the equipment I will need.  In particular I need a very good pair of boots and a decent all weather jacket; I will be passing through a number of different climate zones, going from 35 C to below freezing with mist, rain, snow and fog.  I also need a digital camera which won't freeze and the Olympus u TOUGH-8000 or similar would be absolutely perfect.  But I need lots of smaller items too.  Check out my wish list and see what you maybe able to help me with.

Any company offering to support me will be linked from my webpage on the Martha Care website and I'll be sure to give them a plug whenever I publicise this event.
